october 2021

Enter sweaters and steaming mugs of coffee. October began to chill, not enough to harm the flowers, but enough to make you want to put on your thick sweater before you went out to pick the blooms drenched in freezing dew. Some of the tender blooms began to brown and crinkle, we could feel the farm was coming to a close. I do have two wonderful words for October: Dahlias and Roses. To have both show stopping focal flowers at the same time is still amazing to me. Every morning they were more abundant and more beautiful. Fully opened blush roses, creamy Cafe Au Laits, sunset colored Mignonettes and coffee colored Honey Dijon…The amount of beauty coming from just two varieties of plants in jaw-dropping. Don’t take it from me…Scroll! Scroll! Scroll!

Sadly the time had come to begin pulling tired plants out, we began digging tulip trenches and laying them down egg carton style. The leaves were beginning to rain down and cover the ground in a crunchy carpet. Swans flew overhead, heading to a better spot for the winter, and making a loud show of it. Whenever we tuck bulbs in the ground and get ready for the next season I always hear the quote in my head: “To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.” - Audrey Hepburn
